Charming Cheating Man

There’s a man who’s cheating on his wife,
he lives just down the street from me.
We picked each other up in the No Frills
one November night.
I should have known, the tubs of ice cream
bags of chips and candy packs,
definitely for his kids.
He said my smile made his night and
hoped he’d hear from me.
We exchanged numbers
and I texted him as soon as
I got home.

It took us a week to arrange a time
to meet.
It was a cold and rainy midnight, should have
known.
I met him on Nelson Street.
Under an awning. Tall, handsome,
confused.
He offered to carry my umbrella, to shelter me.
I held my own.
We walked and talked in the rain by the ocean,
no one in sight.
I took him to my favourite tree, we stood there
a while and he said he
loved my smell.
“Indian coconut nectar it’s called”
I replied.

It was so dark and wet, we were so alone.
I asked him questions about his wife,
his kids, his family. I didn’t hold back.
Nervous and kind I listened to the
charming cheating man.
I made him feel
safe because that’s what I do.
There was connection and attraction.
I planned my escape.

We entered a pub at 1:00am, and were the
only two people there other than a
drunk couple doubled over at the bar.
He ordered whiskey. Neat.
I ordered peppermint tea. Dirty.
He said peppermint tea was his favourite.
I asked for two cups.
He asked me questions. Open ended questions.
Fuck.
He paused and thought before
asking another, and another.
He was calm and confident, not
what I’m used to.

The rain stopped and the wind really picked up.
He showed me pictures of his kids because I asked.
Beautiful smiles.
I stared across at the charming cheating man
and asked him why he was sitting across
from me at 1:00am.
He had answers.
I wish I had asked the questions
before this night.
This night, walking and talking in the rain,
was so nice I didn’t want it
to end, but of course,
it had to.
Right?

Long Lasting Long

On heavy nights covered in
bland breezes and uneven
words, I listen to the longing
it never lies, is always heard

Underneath the spoons and
the cloth, over the mouth
and found in froth, its teeth
bite my breath with every exhale

It never arrives again because
it never left to reappear
the love and lasting reading
of thoughts and lines so dear

Once a passion swarmed by
familiar bones and blood
a song worth singing, worth
clinging, to end the flood

The letters and the skin
match perfectly to reflect
the channel in the sky,
it’s the only thing left

Why wait for boredom and
a chance to renew this day
again, when the time is now
to dream and take it all away

The memory lives and stays
on the counter and in the cupboard,
left on the rug covered in dust, for
it lives forever, in every fabric of my lust

Sweet Fish

I am a fisherman and I cast a line
to a fish that lives so far out and beyond his time
I wake early to hook the bait and wait
for my fish to open wide and swallow his fate

The temperature of the river always changes
so sometimes my line has to accommodate ranges
I stand on the riverbank, rod in hand
wondering if today is the day he’ll meet me on land

Empty and quiet it’s a still place to hide
I am alone and cold, my feet in the water, I want him inside
My stick feels a tug and the line gets tight
As my spine straightens I grip harder, this just might

Be the day my line holds, reels and peels
his cheeks off my curved shiny hook, how does it feel?
I want to hold him, smell him, take him, clean him through
until the weather won’t let him leave me blue

Resisting and pulling but doesn’t he know?
What he’ll find on this shore isn’t snow
It is summer every hour, bright, soft, naked, free
Deeper than his river, it is as wide and open as the sea

Come to me sweet fish, hang on and don’t go limp
I’ll never stop baiting my hook or making a skimp
For I yearn to nourish your bones from my land
Even if we cannot be together, let me offer my hand
